  1. A river that rises in the Maikala range in
  2. Madhya Pradesh state, central India, and
  3. flows 1,245 km/778 mi WSW to the Gulf of
  4. Khambat, an inlet of the Arabian Sea. Forming
  5. the traditional boundary between Hindustan
  6. and Deccan, the Narmada is a holy river of
  7. the Hindus. India's Narmada Valley Project is
  8. one of the largest and most controversial
  9. river development projects in the world.
  10. Between 1990 and 2040 it is planned to build
  11. 30 major dams, 135 medium-sized dams and
  12. 3,000 smaller dams in a scheme that will
  13. involve moving 1 million of the valley's
  14. population of 20 million people.
